O grande dia do Teatro Musical está chegando: A 69a cerimonia de premiação do Tony Awards® acontecerá no próximo dia 7 de junho de 2015 no Radio City Music Hall. Foram divulgados hoje pela manhã os indicados ao premio mais cobiçado do teatro americano; apontados pela crítica, o conselho desse ano levou mais uma vez em conta a qualidade técnica e artísticas dos espetáculos que estrearam entre 24 de abril de 2014 e 23 de abril de 2015.
O anúncio foi feito na manhã de hoje, dia 28 de abril, por ninguém menos que Bruce Willis e Mary-Louise Parker no Paramount Hotel. Entre os espetáculos concorrentes, "An American in Paris" e "Fun Home" se deram bem, recebendo 12 indicações cada; "Something Rotten!", um dos últimos a estrearem, recebeu 10 indicações. Dentre os Revivals, "The King and I" recebeu 9 indicações, liderando a lista. As expectativas são grandes para a grande noite da Broadway, que terá como anfitriões Alan Cumming, que recentemente se destacou por reprisar sua performance como o Emcee de “Cabaret”, e Kristin Chenoweth, atriz que originou o papel de Glinda em “Wicked” e vencedora do Tony por sua performance em “You’re A Good Man Charlie Brown” e que concorre ao prêmio de Melhor Atriz Protagonista de Musical por "On The Twentieth Century".
Além de premiar os musicais, e consequentemente atrair o olhar dos fãs de musicais do mundo inteiro, o Tony Awards ® também reconhece as montagens não-musicais, as chamadas straight plays, e nesse campo o destaque ficou para "Wolf Hall Parts One & Two" com 8 indicações e "Skylight" com 7. Ao todo, são 24 categorias de premiação, duas a menos que da última edição, que também premiou nas categorias "Melhor Design de Som para Peça" e "Melhor Design de Som para Musical".
Vale ainda lembrar que a premiação conta com categorias não competitivas. O prêmio Isabelle Stevenson, por exemplo, é destinado a membros da comunidade artística e teatral que tem contribuído de forma incessável para a difusão do artes e demonstrado comprometimento com causas humanitárias. Esse ano o Tony Awards ® Isabelle Stevenson foi concedido a ninguém menos que Stephen Schwartz, compositor de “Wicked”, “Godspell” e “Pippin” e também letrista de “O Corcunda de Notre-Dame” e “Pocahontas”), pelo seu trabalho junto ao ASCAP Musical Theatre Workshop e ASCAP Foundation. Já John Cameron Mitchell, co-criador de “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” recebe um Tony especial por sua atuação nesse musical. A presidente da American Theatre Wing lhe concedeu o premio em consideração a história de Mitchell com o musical: É o letrista e autor do livro do musical e originou o papel título na estreia do musical no circuito Off-Broadway, voltando a dar vida a personagem no atual revival do musical que ganhou a categoria na última edição do prêmio.
Ainda nas categorias não competitivas, Tommy Tune foi indicado ao "Special Tony Awards for Theatre Achievement in a Lifetime", em reconhecimento aos seus anos de carreira e talento. O prêmio de destaque dedicado às companhias nacionais de teatro foi indicado à Cleveland Play House, do estado de Ohio e; Arnold Abramson, Adrian Bryan-Brown e Gene O' Donovan recebem o prêmio em honraria por Excelência Teatral.
Mais do que uma competição, o Tony Awards ® se propõe em ser um celebração a produção teatral americana e uma oportunidade de honrar e reconhecer a excelência do trabalho e empenho dos artistas. Como parte das comemorações, no dia 29 de abril há ainda uma coletiva de imprensa intitulada de “Meet The Nominees” e no dia 15 de maio os indicados são convidados para um almoço no Paramount Hotel. A cerimônia de premiação vai ao ar no domingo dia 7 de junho e será transmitida pela rede de TV americana CBS; no Brasil, ainda não há distribuição dos direitos de transmissão em TV aberta.
