Mesmo em um ano atípico, não poderíamos deixar de celebrar o teatro musical com a sua premiação mais importante: o Tony Awards. É claro que por conta da pandemia e o fechamento dos teatros desde março deste ano criaram um cenário não favorável para o evento, tendo a cerimônia adiada, que estava prevista inicialmente para junho deste ano, e com apenas quatro espetáculos musicais elegíveis, mas como Moulin Rouge (ou talvez Queen) já dizia: o show deve continuar!
Entre os musicais originais, tivemos como elegíveis apenas a versão de palco de 'Moulin Rouge', o musical biográfico de Tina Turner, chamado de 'Tina', 'Jagged Little Pill', com músicas de Alanis Morissette e a adaptação musical de Percy Jackson 'The Lightning Thief', que mesmo sendo favorecido por esse cenário, não levou nenhuma indicação. Já entre os revivals de musicais, nenhum espetáculo foi elegível, tendo todas suas categorias cortadas dessa edição.
Outra peculiaridade dessa edição foi a categoria de Melhor Ator em um Musical, na qual só tinham elegíveis Aaron Tveit, Christian de 'Moulin Rouge', e Chris McCarrell, que interpretou o papel título de 'Percy Jackson', massacrado pela mídia. Nessa situação, Tveit foi o único indicado ao Tony de Melhor Ator.
